Solus OS

Up until now, I've pretty much stuck to the popular linux distros. But last night I stumbled upon Solus OS. I downloaded the latest 32bit iso and put it on a flashdrive. My HP 6510b really likes it and so do I. I had to download a Broadcom STA wireless package through the software manager, but that was easy enough. So far so good... so good, that I replaced Xubuntu 12.04 on one of my desktops with it.  LibreOffice, VLC, and more already installed out-of-box. I should point out that Solus OS is based on Debian Stable: and because of that, I was easily able to install my Brother 3-in-1 DEB drivers. Very clean looking distro.

How to install Medibuntu in Ubuntu 12.04

Open terminal and type:
     sudo -E wget --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/$(lsb_release -cs).list && sudo apt-get --quiet update && sudo apt-get --yes --quiet --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get --quiet update

then:
     sudo apt-get install app-install-data-medibuntu

**Remember, Medibuntu’s repository is deactivated by upgrading to a newer Ubuntu release, so you should run these commands again after any release upgrade.

How to install Gimp 2.8 on Ubuntu 12.04

** If upgrading from a previous version of Gimp, you should remove gimp-plugin-registry first by opening Terminal and typing:
     sudo apt-get remove gimp-plugin-registry

To install, open terminal and type:
     sudo add-apt-repository ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp
then:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gimp

That should do it :)

To take advantage of the new "Single-Window Mode", select the option under the "Windows" tab.

Pear OS 4 - Linux Distro

Pear OS 4 was released a few days ago. If you're looking for a Mac-like linux experience out-of-the-box, then you might want to try this one. I quickly tested the live version and  liked what I saw. Under the hood it's Ubuntu-based Gnome 3 in either 32bit or 64bit versions. I hope to install it on my HP laptop before too long.

Linux... I'm back using pclinuxos KDE

I read on Distrowatch yesterday that Linux Mint and PCLOS both came out with new KDE releases.  I quit using Linux 3 months ago, but decided to give it another chance today.  I tried installing Linux Mint 12 KDE first, but because it failed to have a driver for my on-board wifi, I quickly turned my attention to PCLOS.  PCLOS loaded and installed without a hitch.  So far, I've installed my favourite apps and got my wireless Brother MFC-490CW Printer/Scanner/Copier working.

Windows Live Essentials: Movie Maker

If you're using Windows 7 and you're looking for a great photo/video slideshow maker, look no further than the Windows Live Essentials Movie Maker.  Personally, I'd have to say that it's the best, free slideshow app out there for the Windows platform.  It comes complete with themes and features including the popular pan and zoom effect.  You can add video clips wherever you want.  I highly recommend this program and that says a lot because I usually try to avoid using anything "Microsoft"!
